Lifestyle Changes I Made

Personal Care/Cosmetics – eliminated:

  • Sodium laurel sulfate
  • Parabens (any form)
  • Fragrance (unless from essential oil)
  • Triclosan
  • Benzene (any form)
  • Hair dye.  Yes, I finally embraced my natural color!
  • Methylhexylcinnimate
  • Petroleum distillates such as Propylene Glycol, PPG, PEG, etc.
  • Fluoride
  • Many others – too many to list them all (I usually check the safety of each individual ingredient on the EWG Skin Deep Database

Dietary – eliminated:

  • Gluten
  • Dairy (to avoid casein)
  • Unfermented Soy
  • Refined sugar
  • Preservatives
  • Anything artificial (including GMOs)

Supplements – added:

  • Vitamins A, B, C, E
  • Minerals: Calcium, Magnesium, Zinc, Iron, Iodine, Copper, Chromium picolinate
  • Other: CoQ10, Glutathione, 5-htp
  • Tea with Ashwagandha (an Ayurvedic herb to support thyroid/adrenal function)

Household Items –  eliminated:

  • Cleaners, detergents, etc that didn’t have low ratings on EWG Guide to Healthy Cleaning
  • Bleach (except occasionally on white laundry)
  • Synthetic fragrances (from plug-ins, sprays, carpet freshener, etc.)Household Items; eliminated: Click here to see how I did it


  • Added Kundalini Yoga to my workout regimen
  • Began Ayurvedic massage therapy


  • NEVER Heat food in plastic – heat releases toxins like bisphenol A (aka bpa) even those that are BPA-free because it’s been replaced with a chemical cousin that is untested for safety
  • NEVER Use nonstick cookware – the coating is toxic. Use non-chemically treated parchment paper liner instead
  • NEVER Burn paraffin candles because they release carcinogenic benzene when burned, and most contain synthetic fragrance (aka fragrance oil)
  •  ALWAYS Read the ingredients list – if it doesn’t have one, don’t buy the product!!  Any company that won’t disclose its ingredients is hiding something (most likely toxins).

This list looks overwhelming, I know, but if you tackle one thing at a time, you can do it! Hopefully this will help guide you through the process of transitioning to nontoxic products.

Bear in mind I made these changes over the course of about 6 months, and that was an accelerated plan. By accelerated, I mean that we often replaced a category of items in bulk without using the products we already had.  I just couldn’t stand the idea of using toxic chemicals any longer!

The more rational (and cost effective) way to do it is to replace a toxic product with a clean one when you run out.
