Thai Crystal Deodorant Review

One of my most frequently asked questions is “what’s a good natural deodorant?”

Thai Crystal is by far my favorite and the one that works best for me.  There are two forms of this deodorant (a spray and a solid) and I’ve tried them both, so I’ll discuss them here.

First up is the spray.  I like it because it is fast, and I can spray under my arms quickly (or anywhere else that tends to get stinky).  It takes a short time to dry, and then I can move on to the next in my beauty routine.  During a day with normal activity level, I can go all day without getting stinky.  During times when I get really sweaty, (summer or exercising) I have to reapply more frequently than with regular deodorant.  To me, that’s a small price to pay for not being exposed to harmful chemicals like aluminum, triclosan, and synthetic fragrance, etc.  My biggest complaint is that the pump that comes in the bottle inevitably stops spraying and I have to switch it out with the pump from other spray bottles that I have on hand.

Next up is the rock form of this deodorant.  It has the same effectiveness as the spray, but the application is different.  To apply, get it wet, then use it like a roll on.  If it’s too wet it will roll down past your armpits, and you’ll have to wipe it off.  If it’s not wet enough, it can pull the skin a little bit.  Another thing I’ve noticed with this one is that sometimes it has kind of an ammonia smell to it (I’ve never noticed this with the spray).  Not sure if that’s due to my body temperature, hormone levels, or something else, but it’s worth noting.

A few notes:

  • These products will sting if you use it right after shaving!  I’ve learned that the hard way a few times.
  • These products are NOT antiperspirants.  Since sweat is your body’s way of eliminating toxins, I personally don’t think it’s a good idea to trap it inside your body with an antiperspirant.  That can’t be good for you.
  • The liquid will crystallize if it gets too cold.  That’s exactly what happened to mine while staying with my grandmother during the winter because it was 28 degrees outside and there was a hole in her roof!

Overall, I like both forms of this deodorant, though I prefer the spray for the reasons noted above.  It keeps me from getting stinky, which has been an issue with other natural deodorants.  Here’s a link to my Amazon page if you think you’d like to give this deodorant a shot (look in the beauty/personal care section):  http://astore.amazon.com/mycrnoli-20

Tisserand Rose Blend Deodorant Review

If you’ve read my other posts then you know that I refuse to use any product that contains toxic chemicals. Deodorant is no exception. I also love to shop, especially at discount stores.

This was another TJ Maxx find I bought because I was getting low on the Botanical Societies Citrus deodorant I had bought there previously (and loved). I like to have one that I keep in my purse for BO emergencies, so I decided to go ahead and buy this one. This company appears to be out of England, because the prices on their website are in pounds. The About section doesn’t say where they’re from, and they don’t have a “where to buy” link or anything of that nature.

The smell is kind of like a wild rose. You can definitely smell the rose, but you can also smell the other scents, which include Rose Geranium, Lemon & Grapefruit. It’s a roll on, but dries fairly quickly.

Unfortunately, it didn’t prevent me from stinking. I applied it before several workouts and I smelled terrible after each one. Since that didn’t seem to work, I tried it after a shower when I knew I wouldn’t sweat and on multiple occasions. That was even worse! I basically had rose-scented BO. Luckily it wasn’t so overpowering that others could smell it, but I definitely got a whiff every now and then and it wasn’t pleasant. It’s a shame because I really wanted to love this deodorant.

To be fair to this product, I am one of those people that have a hard time with natural deodorants. Many of them make me smell worse than if I hadn’t put anything on at all. If you’re not prone to body odor, this will probably work just fine for you. If you’re like me and tend to get stinky when you sweat, I wouldn’t recommend this deodorant. I’m sure this company is perfectly fine (they sell other products), but this specific product just didn’t work for me.

Hopefully you found this helpful.  Thanks for reading!

The Botanical Societies Citrus Deodorant

This week I’ve reviewed two other deodorants, so I figured I would throw in one more for good measure.

I bought this deodorant at TJ Maxx as a backup to keep at my office for those days when I forget to put deodorant on before I leave the house.  We’ve all done it at some point in our lives, right? I’ve done it enough times to warrant having a backup on hand.  Because I commute an hour (one way) to work and then have to go straight to community theater rehearsals without going home first, I can’t afford to be without deodorant all day.

Type:  Roll-on

Price:  $4.99 for 1 oz

Scent:  Citrus

Since I hadn’t had the opportunity to use this one yet, I decided to leave it in my tote bag so I could test it out, and I’ve been using it for a week now.  It is not an antiperspirant, but as I said in other posts I don’t want to trap sweat inside my body.

This might be my new favorite!  It’s easy to put on, dries quickly, has a pleasant smell, and it works!  Even when I forgot to put it on one morning before exercising, I didn’t stink that bad.  There was a little smell, but not as much as with some other natural deodorants.  When I used it after shaving, it didn’t hurt, which was surprising since it contains citric acid.  There were a few days where I sweat quite a bit while at work, because it’s pretty hot in our office right now – the heater is way too high for me.  Even on those days I didn’t notice any odor.

Normally I like to check out product safety on the EWG Skin Deep Database, but this company wasn’t found so I checked each ingredient individually.  The highest rating on an ingredient was a 4, which is not bad.  It’s definitely a better rating than most traditional deodorants, and so far it’s been more effective than any other natural deodorant I’ve tried.

Nourish Organic Vanilla Almond Deodorant

Desperate for some relief from my hypothyroidism symptoms, I was willing to try ANYTHING.  Any little change that might help, I was going to try it – especially if it’s avoiding the use of products with endocrine disrupting chemicals.  Traditional deodorants contain things such as triclosan and synthetic fragrances, which are endocrine disruptors.  On top of that, there is emerging evidence that links aluminum (the active ingredient in most antiperspirants) to Alzheimer’s, so I’d rather be safe than sorry.

I discovered Nourish Organic after deciding to switch to more natural, organic, and nontoxic personal care products.  It’s made with all USDA certified organic ingredients, including essential oils.  Their products can be found online at Vitacost, in stores such as HEB (a southern US grocery store chain), Natural Grocers, Whole Foods, and even Ulta.  I bought the deodorant after trying the body wash and lotion in the same scent, which is really awesome, like a cookie!

It looks and feels like a mix between white solid and clear solid deodorant.  It has a slightly more tacky feel than a solid, but isn’t quite a gel, either.  It glides on easily.  For the most part, it keeps me odor free.  It is definitely less effective in the summer when I sweat more.  The effectiveness is increased if I use a brush and put a layer of baking soda on top of the deodorant.  The drawback to doing this is the extra time it takes and the mess it makes.  It’s also not cheap at about $7 for 2.2 oz.

Overall, it’s pretty effective.  If you are one of those people that tends toward body odor, this might not be your best option.  If you’re like me, you might be able to get away with it during the winter months or when you won’t be sweating.  If the price is a concern, then this might be a better choice.

If you have any questions, please ask in the comments section and I’ll do my best to answer it.  Thanks for reading!

Update:  I forgot to mention the price.  The spray is under $5 for 8 oz.  The solid is just over $5 for 4.25 oz.  Both of these products last quite a while longer than traditional deodorants.
